Overview

"Theatre of Madness" is a mixed reality project which introduces the Sunbeam theatre in Hong Kong in a fun and enjoyable way. The project first transformed the traditional theatre mixed with wild fantasies into a virtual reality tour, where users will be able to explore the theatre in detail. Then it is expanded into a augmented reality project, where elements of the theatre is broken down individually to mix with a common pantry cabinet setting to create another play of its own. By utilizing mixed reality, the beautiful, unique yet under-appreciated architecture of the theatre is reintroduced its audience.

This project is made possible with the help and guidance from Mr. Tobias Klein at City University of Hong Kong.

1. Virtual Reality Tour

Sunbeam theatre (新光戲院) is an unique theatre in Hong Kong. Started by the emigrants in the 70s, it is the only theatre left in Hong Kong which exhibits Cantonese Opera. It is significant for its contribution and dedication to Cantonese Opera, yet a number of people debated about possible closure as the Chinese art is no longer popular in Hong Kong. Like a lot of young people in Hong Kong, I did not pay much attention to the theatre until the debate happened. I revisited the theatre after the debate, and was astonished by its unique beauty. Hoping to preserve such a beautiful architecture and share it with others who are not familiar about it, I initiated the project that transforms the theatre into a part of a VR tour.

When I began constructing the VR tour, I recalled some of my experiences visiting the theatre in the past. When I first visited the theatre at a very young age, I was overwhelmed by the posters full of enlarged faces of the actors with full Cantonese Opera make up. Hoping to archive and share the iconic theatre with others who have not noticed its significance and beauty, I took the opportunity to create a complex 3D model with details and textures of the theatre. At the same time I added some a personal touch into the scene by visualizing my childhood memories related to the theatre with some exaggeration and imagination. By utilizing 3DS max and unity, I transformed the theatre into a virtual reality tour filled with wild imagination. With a pair of oculus rift, users will be able to explore the theatre interactively as demonstrated in the video below.

2. Augmented Reality - Projection Mapping

With the 3D models created for the virtual reality tour, I began to think about the possibilities to further develop the project. It dawned on me that instead of expanding the project further in a virtual reality space, it can be interesting as well to be combined with something we see in our daily life in reality. Moreover, virtual reality using a headset is a very personal experience, I want to seek for the possibility to transform the experience into a public and shared one. Soon the project has extended as a 3D projection mapping project, where I turn a common, regular pantry area into an augmented reality piece.

A common pantry area was scanned into a 3D model. With the 3D model I went further with exaggeration and imagination in the animation, then transformed the day-to-day pantry area into a mini theatre filled with madness, irregularity and irrationality with simple animation. Such imagination is then exhibited in reality with the use of 3D projection mapping. The animation created with the 3D model of the pantry is projected back on to the pantry, and generated an interesting space as shown in the video documentation.

As the combination has generated an interesting result, it has enlightened me to think more about augmented reality. The possibilities with augmented reality excites me, and I am hoping that I can take what I have learnt further into creating something that will attract and excites others as well.

3. Takeaways

Mixed Reality is the new way to share experience

This is my first mixed reality experience and I had a lot of fun. I was constantly amazed from the moment I started capturing the theatre to the time I transformed it into a VR narrative. It led me to think about how to explore the area of mixed reality even further and turn it into a great design that helps people to share various experience easily.

AR is not only pertained to personal experience

Prior working on the project, I always considered AR as something personal, something you can only see from the display of a personal device like smartphone/hololens. However turning this project into a projection mapping visualization made me realize AR is also something that can be shared across a space among public easily, and gave me new insights about the field of AR.
